Sensorium no. 2
Welcome back to the Sensorium, which is the fancy name for my series where I talk about what I’ve been obsessed with recently. You can read the previous installment below:
OPI nail polish in baby, take a vow
I’m a big fan of the Essie shade ballet slippers, but its formula is so splotchy you have to apply a ton of layers, and then those layers take forever to dry, and if you’re impatient like me your nails end up smudged and ruined because you tried to use your hands before an hour is up. During a recent move I accidentally left my bottle of ballet slippers and its difficult nature left me reluctant to spend money on it again, so I was left with a pink nail polish void that I tried to fill with no success until OPI baby, take a vow, which was an impulse buy from Marshall’s. It’s very subtle and buildable, with one coat being barely visible, and it dries very fast too. It is sheerer than Ballet Slippers, and I might even like it more because of that. It’s become my default nail polish, and I’m already halfway through my bottle.
Comedy podcasts
It’s awesome when you find one thing that completely transforms a drab part of your life. For me I’ve found listening to comedy podcasts on my commute makes me actually excited to get in my car and drive in traffic. I’ve even found myself upset when my drive goes faster than expected because that means I have less time to listen. There’s something so fun getting to hear people who are paid to be funny sit in front of microphones and talk about random crap. Knowing I’ll laugh at least once during my post-work drive helps keep me out of a funk.
I listen to several different comedy podcasts, but my favorite is Public Figures. Originally called the Nateland podcast until Nate Bargatze left it early this year, it’s still just as funny without him.
Weevils in the Grits
The name sounds like a Waffle House horror story, but it’s actually a delightful piece of folk music. I’m a sucker for lighthearted fiddle music, and this piece has been on repeat for a few weeks now and I don’t want to listen to anything else. It took a great effort to peel myself away from it for Noah Kahan’s new album (which is also great, btw) and now I’m back listening to this piece again and again. Call me enamored.
Utopian Scholastic Music
If you were a nerdy kid growing up in the 90s/2000s, this will send you on the ultimate nostalgia trip. Kester Spach’s YouTube video is excellent, with music and visuals that feel like they come straight out of a Eyewitness VCR. The rest of their YouTube channel also has lots of other cool nostalgic videos, so I definitely recommend checking them out.
Coconut Berry Red Bull
I realized I liked Malibu rum solely because of the coconut flavor, so now I drink non-alcoholic coconut drinks instead, which are way cheaper and I can bring them to work (yay!) A coconut Red Bull tastes like you’re lounging on the beach and accidentally inhaled suntan lotion, but in a good way.
I hope you enjoyed this post, maybe you found some of the things I mentioned as enjoyable as I do, maybe you hate everything on this list with a vitriolic passion. Either way, thanks for reading until the end. As a reward, here’s a drawing of a dandy with a crocodile.
